The Path out of Poverty Programme or POP in short is a holistic and integrated (cradle to the grave) development programme which helps farm workers and their families escape from the continuous cycles of poverty which have trapped them for so many generations.
The golden threads of education and health weave their way through all our work. At the present time the POP programme touches the lives of 1268 individuals from thirty farms and in the two rural villages of Riebeek West and Riebeek Kasteel. Inside the POP programme we focus on the future by concentrating on the needs of rural children. We do this by putting in place inter-locking projects which provide opportunities to strengthen young people and help them avoid the damaging patterns of behaviour which have been so destructive to their parents and which have helped keep them in poverty. Rural children are particularly marginalised. Our programme has provided a safe and constructive space in which children are able to grow strong and achieve their dreams. Through its fifteen (15) interlocking developmental projects the POP programme currently touches the lives of adults and children living on farms in the area. Parenting skills training for parents of childen and young people who participate in the programme. Our Pop programme is developmental and participative in nature and could be replicated in other areas where rural poverty produces children who suffer from FAS, where there are high rates of alcohol and family abuse, malnutrition, lack of stimulation, school drop-outs, teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, unemployment, poor health and despair.
